What do people hope to accomplish with blogging?

The blog objective is simple.  A blogging goal could be to make money from blogging, attract attention to a blog, identify you as the subject matter expert, stimulate creativity from visitor’s comments, get your name out, or blog for fun. There are many reasons. Objectives are your milestones. Objectives are not be the end-goal but steps to reach your overall goal. As you reach your objectives, you may have higher-level objectives A complete blog objective will be composed of a purpose, action, and a measure.   The following can be made into goals but are written as smart goals.

  • Number of posts
  • Number of followers
  • Number of social shares
  • Number of social visits
  • Audience growth- unique and returns
  • Conversation rate
  • Conversions
  • Subscribers
  • Inbound links
  • Technorati, Alltop, and other directory listings
  • SEO Improvements
  • Bounce Rate
  • Organic Traffic
  • New Visitor Growth
  • Profit

Blog Purpose Objectives

What is the purpose of the blog? For our definition, blog purpose objectives have to do with your goal – increasing or improving connections, post, repost, comments, joins, likes, views, shares, demographics, mentions, etc.

Blog Purpose Examples:

Increase blog following to 1,000 by December 31, 2014.

To increase awareness about Chinese cuisine to capture 80% of our demographic circle and get a minimum of 2000 comments  by  October.

To expand marketing demographics to include Los Angeles and receive 10 shares Facebook per month by February .

Blog Action Objectives

People, content, work flow, learning. Who will create, communicate and conduct the task, how many and when. You create at least one action objective for each blog purpose objective.

Blog Action Examples:

Customer service, sales and marketing departments will identify 10 alliance partners, help blog, repost, and spread the word about atom widgets new product line at least 3 times a week.

Owner of blog, Chinese chefs in Los Angeles area, customer service, friends, and alliance groups will post pics and recipes at least twice  day.

Give 10%  discount to travel group backpackers of Los Angeles to posts five times a week .

Blog Measure Objectives

What are the results of all of you blogging efforts? Measuring blog goal can be related to money, time, or other tangible results. This is a measurement of all of your hard work.  This should be directly related to your blog’s purpose. This statement can be written as past tense statement of your blog purpose.

Example – Increased blog following to 2,500 by December 1, 2014.
